About the breed

Athletic and Biddable

This breed readily accepts training challenges. They are currently competing in Agility, Scent Work, Rally, Obedience, Dock Diving, and Fast CAT. In Europe they are frequently used for herding, dog dancing, and Treibball.

They are also effective as medical alert dogs because of their outstanding sense of smell.

Loving and Loyal

Bohemian Shepherds are sensitive and respond best to positive training with engaging motivational incentives. They are highly devoted and prefer to be as close as possible to their owners at all times. They do best with families who have someone at home during the day. They get along well with other animals, if properly socialized, but do not do well left alone for long periods of time.

AKC FSS

Currently the breed is recognized as part of the AKC Foundation Stock Service. This means they compete as Bohemian Shepherds in performance venues and in Open Shows for conformation.

Attentive and Watchful

Bohemian Shepherds love their people and are great watchdogs. They are exceptionally gentle around children yet discerning of strangers. They sound ferocious but are not innately aggressive. They do require training and careful socialization.

Medium Stature

Though they may look like German Shepherds, Bohemian Shepherds are not directly related. They are an old breed, dating back to the 1300s. They are smaller in stature than many other herding shepherds and have more stable temperaments.
